Diet & Supplements Part 2

How To Relieve Your Neck Pain & Back Pain With Diet & Supplementation Part 2

By Dr. Todd P. Sullivan

In the first part of this series I discussed how to relieve your lower back pain and neck pain by altering your diet and eating anti-inflammatory foods. The second part of the series is going to discuss what supplements you can take to reduce inflammation in your back and relieve the pain in your back. These four supplements are the core supplementation to an anti-inflammatory diet and overall health.

The first supplement that I recommend to all of my patients is a good multivitamin. Notice I said "good" because you can purchase lesser quality multivitamins such as Centrum or One A Day and to be honest they are junk. All of their operating costs going to promoting the vitamins on TV and very little goes into what makes up the vitamin. A good rule of thumb is to try to buy the most expensive vitamin that your budget can afford because you get what you pay for in quality. At my office I use a professional grade supplements from Anabolic Laboratories . Two other higher quality supplement companies are Douglas Labs and Metagenics.

1. Multivitamin: The modern diet is known to be deficient in numerous micronutrients. Supplementation with a multivitamin can help address many of these deficiencies. Low micronutrient intake may accelerate the aging process and promote the diseases of aging and other chronic diseases. Recommended Dose: 2 capsules per day

2. Magnesium: Magnesium is a chronically deficient in the modern diet and promotes a chronic inflammatory state. Magnesium deficiency is associated with high blood pressure, diabetes and headaches. Magnesium plays a crucial role in 1,000's of cellular processes. Recommended Dose: 3 Capsules per day = 400 mg.

3. Vitamin D (D3): Vitamin D is important and finally there has more and more information coming out on the benefits of vitamin D. We derive virtually no vitamin D from the diet and we are suppose to get vitamin D from the sun. Sunscreen with an SPF of 8 reduces vitamin D production by 95%. Subsequently, most Americans are chronically deficient in Vitamin D, which promotes a chronic inflammatory state that is associated with expression of numerous chronic diseases. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with chronic muscular pain, as well as osteoporosis, arthritis, fibromyalgia, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and depression. The researchers shows that we should be taking in about 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily. Recommended Dose: 2 Tablets per day = 4,000 IU.

4. Omega 3 Fish Oil (EPA/DHA): Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids addresses the deficiency of omega-3's in the modern diet and helps balance our ratio of omega-6 to omega 3 fatty acids. Adequate omega 3 intake helps to produce inflammatory activity and promote health. Recommended Dose: 4 Capsules per day = 2 grams.

Adding these four supplements to your daily routine along with a healthy anti-inflammatory you can significantly reduce the amount of inflammation body which will help to decrease your lower back pain and neck pain.
